There's an event going on Friday designed to develop our wildlife stewards of tomorrow! It's Youth Day at the 29th Annual Dixie Deer Classic, Friday, March 6, at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.
It will offer an opportunity to teach our children to be good stewards of our natural resources, and to appreciate the important skills learned and satisfaction gained through managing the resources wisely.
By participating in this workshop children will develop an appreciation of how fragile wildlife habitats can be, the difference that responsible wildlife management can make in the lives of everyone, and the important role that they play as our wildlife stewards of tomorrow.
Two activities will follow Standard Course Of Study objectives in biology, allowing students – with advance permission from their school – to receive academic credit for attending.
Middle School students will learn more about the white-tailed deer in an N.C. Standard Course Of Study (SCOS)-correlated wildlife workshop entitled “Oh Deer.” This workshop starts at 9 a.m. Friday. A self-guided scavenger hunt on the Dixie Deer Classic floor will then unlock some of North Carolina’s wildlife mysteries.
A self-guided scavenger hunt will be waiting for high school students. They'll talk about the number one reason most species become endangered in the first place, chronic wasting disease, and the several unique adaptations that allow raptors to be very successful hunters.
Youth Age 12 and under are admitted for free! Youth 13-18 will be admitted at half-price, $5 . You can get more details at www.dixiedeerclassic.org/youthdayevents.htm or call 919/552-9449 for reservations or for more details.
