A Death In The Family

We have sad news to report on a young lady featured in one of the Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things segments. Keturah Wright died January ninth. She was part of the story on Lori Lee and the foundation she started called MeFine. Lee's son Folden died from Leukemia in September 2004 at the age of two. Lee started the foundation to help other sick kids and their families.
Keturah also had leukemia. We met the teenager in November at Duke Children's Hospital. Her condition improved enough for her to go home to Winston-Salem before Christmas.  The week after Christmas she started feeling bad and the family ended up in the emergency room at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem on New Year's Eve.  Keturah went back to Duke, to the intensive care unit, the first week of January.  She died late in the evening January 9th. The services were held January 14th in Winston-Salem.
The MeFine foundation was there every step of the way. Lee and Associate Director Lisa Brown spent hours with the family in the days before Keturah's death. They provided money for meals, gas and the cost of the funeral. For months the foundation had been helping the Wrights with monthly bills. They explained, taking care of a sick child is a tremendous financial burden outside of the medical costs. Keturah's father essentially had to move to Durham to take care of his daughter. Fortunately for the Wright family MeFine was there to help provide financial and emotional support so the family could concentrate on taking care of Keturah.
