What They See Is What They'll Be
That is the motto of the group 100 Black Men. The Triangle-East chapter lives by that motto as the members work to keep young men on the right track. The concept started in 1963 in New York City. 100 black men came together to improve the quality of life and create educational opportunities for blacks. The Triangle-East chapter focuses on mentoring. President Tony Jeffreys told me the men work with ninth grade mentees every other Saturday, teaching them life skills and exposing them to cultural and community activities like CIAA football games and visits to companies in Research Triangle Park. The men spend group time and one on one time with their mentees. President Jeffreys spends one on one time with 16 year old Geoffrey Williams. Jeffreys says he is a listening ear to his mentee, keeping him motivated to finish High School and pursue post secondary education. Jeffreys says he visits Geoffrey's school, takes him to lunch and talks with his guidance counselor. Geoffrey's mother Felecia Williams says, "As a single parent its hard anyway trying to raise a male and although I can do a lot of things for him and with him its still not the same as having men in his life who teach him how a man is supposed to do in society." That's exactly what they get in the 100, role models who want to be in that role. You can reach Tony Jeffreys at ajeffreys1@nc.rr.com.
