What Would You Do?
Stella Sieber had a tough decision to make in the summer of 2001. She saw a driver hydroplane on I-85 and flip. She decided to pull over and help. Turns out that decision left her in need of help. Another driver hit Stella from behind as she stood at the back of her car. She was pinned in and had to have both her legs amputated. That didn't slow Stella down or dampen her spirit. She's always been a giving person. She was planning a mission trip to Haiti at the time of her accident. She didn't make it but she did go to Baton Rouge to volunteer her time for Hurricane Katrina victims. "I think that indirectly people seeing me walking around helping other people, probably they were encouraged" Sieber said. Stella volunteers with an amputee support group at Duke Hospital. She's even participated in some relay races. She is an inspiration to other amputees, especially young ones. Stella didn't let being in the hospital stop her volunteer work. She was involved with the Boy Scout troop her sons were in at the time and continued to work with the scouts from her hospital bed. Stella went back to work in her lab which was modified to accommodate her now. She is truly an inspiration and a good example of what can be done with a good heart and some tenacity.
