Benson woman rescued from submerged SUV in Johnston County creek after medical emergency

A Benson woman rescued from a car submerged in a creek near Cornwallis Road is expected to be okay.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the Cleveland Fire Department responded to calls of a car that had crashed into the creek.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified Kimberly Mozingo Byrd as the driver. According to the SHP, Byrd was driving down Cornwallis Road when she experienced a medical emergency that caused her to cross the centerline and run off the roadway.

The SHP said Byrd’s SUV flipped three times down an embankment before being submerged into the creek. According to a post on the Cleveland Fire Department Facebook page, when they arrived at the scene, the SUV was halfway submerged into the water.

First responders safely removed Byrd from the SUV and took him to WakeMed for treatment. Authorities did not issue any citations.
