RALEIGH, N.C. — A spokesman for the Wake County Public School System said Thursday that more than 810 of the system's 1,167 teaching assistants would lose their jobs if the state Senate's budget proposal carries the day.

Wake County has cut more than 400 teaching assistants since 2009, according to spokesman Michael Evans.

In their plan unveiled Tuesday, Senate Republicans called for cutting 13,000 teaching assistants statewide and investing those savings into creating more, smaller classes.
