Smith Magnet Elementary earns IB status
Garner's Smith Magnet Elementary School learned Tuesday that it has been authorized as an IB Primary Years Programme by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The announcement, which came three days before the first round of school choice selection winds up Friday, gives Garner-area students access to IB schools from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The IB pathway begins at Smith Elementary and moves to East Garner Magnet Middle and Garner Magnet High School.
“I cannot be more proud of every stakeholder who has been involved in this journey of re-culturing our school identity, raising our academic direction to the high standards of the IBO's 21st Century vision and observing the buy-in and commitment from all members of the Smith Magnet community,” Smith Magnet Elementary Principal Chris Lassiter said in a statement.
The school's staff has been working for several years toward the authorization. The process includes staff training and the development of IB lesson plans. An International Baccalaureate Organization team visited the school in November to determine if it had met the requirements necessary requirement.
The IB Primary Years Programme is designed for students ages 3 to 12 and focuses teaching children to learn beyond the confines of subject area.
Founded in 1968, the IB currently works with 3,339 schools in 141 countries to develop and offer challenging programs to more than 997,000 students worldwide.
