RALEIGH, N.C. — Some Wake County students started school on Monday.

Five year-round schools – Alston Ridge Elementary, Highcroft Elementary, Lake Myra Elementary, Rand Road Elementary and Timber Drive Elementary – started classes. The schools recently converted to a single-track system to save the county money.

Most year-round schools split students into four groups, or tracks, and put them on a rotating schedule in which three tracks are in class and one is on vacation.

The change to the single-track system at the five schools, which didn’t have large enough enrollments to warrant multiple tracks, will save the county about $500,000 a year, officials said.
