King of Millbrook named Wake principal of the year

Dana King of Millbrook Magnet High School was named the 2010 Principal of the Year in Wake County Thursday night. Robert Grant of Briarcliff Elementary was named 2010 Assistant Principal of the Year.

Dana King of Millbrook Magnet High School was named the 2010 Principal of the Year in Wake County Thursday night. 

Robert Grant of Briarcliff Elementary was named 2010 Assistant Principal of the Year.

The school system held a ceremony to recognize the outstanding performances of the pair – and finalists in each category – at the Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh.

King has been principal at Millbrook for eight years. Before that, she was principal at East Millbrook Magnet Middle and worked at Athens Drive and Sanderson high schools. She was the 1995 WCPSS Assistant Principal of the Year.

The other finalists for principal of the year were: Jim Argent of Lake Myra Elementary, Dr. Pamela Kinsey-Barker of Brassfield Elementary, Teresa Winstead of Durant Road Elementary and Cathy Williams of East Garner Magnet Middle.

Grant has been assistant principal at Briarcliff for 2 1/2 years. He worked as an administrative intern at Washington Magnet Elementary and taught at Washington Magnet, Durant Road Elementary and schools in New York and Washington, D.C.

Other finalists for the assistant principal award were: Jennifer Carfano of Herbert Akins Road Elementary, Syreeta Smith of North Forest Pines Elementary, Stacey Weddle of East Wake Middle and Cheryl Munn of Southeast Raleigh High.

All finalists received a trophy, a cart of office supplies provided by Home Depot and a monetary award.
