Wake school board changes how they hear from public

The Wake County Public School System issued new guidelines Thursday for members of the public who would comment at regular Board of Education meetings.
The new rules go into effect Tuesday when the board meets at the school administration building at 3600 Wake Forest Road beginning at 3 p.m.
The changes issued by the school system are as follows:
- Those who wish to speak may only sign themselves up to speak. A person can not put the name of someone else who has yet to arrive on the list.
- Speakers who obtain a voucher for seating in the board room will be asked to list their voucher number when they sign up. The move will help staff to locate speakers when their name is called, schools spokesman Bill Poston explained in a statement.
- The final change reduces the amount of personal information speakers must provide. Those who sign up no longer need to give their full street address. A town or city will suffice.
The school system made the changes "in an effort to make signing up for public comment faster, more efficient and equitable," according to a statement.
