— The graduation rate from Wake County high schools remained steady in 2009-10 at 78.4 percent, officials said Thursday.

The rate is based on the number of ninth-grade students who graduate four years later.

Rates for Native American and Hispanic students and students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches showed marked gains from 2008-09, officials said.

The graduation rate for Native American students jumped by 9 percentage points, to 95.7 percent; the rate for Hispanics rose 3.3 percentage points, to 54.4 percent; and the rate for economically disadvantaged students rose 5.5 percentage points, to 59.7 percent.

“I applaud and commend our teachers and principals who have worked hard to achieve these gains,” Ron Margiotta, school board chairman, said in a statement. “I know through our continued hard work we can build on these improvements.”

There still is a wide gap between graduation rates for white students and most minorities. Whites posted an 89.4 percent rate for the second straight year, while the rate for black students was 64.2 percent, up 0.8 percentage points from 2008-09. The rate for Hispanics remains below 55 percent, and the rate for mixed-race students tumbled from 81.2 percent last year to 76.4 percent.

Now please explain to me what the he-- the NAACP has done for educational improvement for minorities? a teacher cannot over come a home that puts low value on education and demonstrating for unaccountability at any cost is counterproductive.

"ONCE again, you can blame the schools and teachers all you want. I hope to live and see the day when the 17 adn 18 yo students and PARENTS are ACTUALLY held accountable for their own failures..... I can dream I'm sure!!"
I applaud you com mon sents!!! I could not have said it better! Everybody cries about the teachers and schools when in many, many cases the students and parents are the real problem and cause of the failures. My wife is a Wake County Middle School Teacher and sees these kinds of failures on a daily basis. Without motivated students and involved parents what you have is a recipe for failure, and bussing isn't the answer to this problem...

59.9% (after 10 years of diversity busing) for free/reduced lunch kids ... and we're afraid of community schools???

What's the percentage of free/reduced lunch kids that enjoy being bused to a far-flung school ... anybody know? I suppose it's pretty low because it makes it tougher to graduate and participate in ANY extra-curricular activities.

Too bad it wouldn't show parental involvement levels attached to students. Bet the students with involved parents have the highest graduation rate REGARDLESS of color.

59.7% graduation rate for the economically disadvantaged students, the existing busing policy sure seems to be working well.

"good ol Ron is congradulating this? He needs to be issuing an apology for doing a horrible job "-1 of the original

RIF - reading is fundamental. He is congratulating them on the IMPROVEMENTS, not the results.

Remember folks, this is what happens when the voters turn apathetic and don't bother to educate themselves about the issues.

And lets be honest about it, how long has this been going on? If the survival rates at our hospitals were the same as our graduation rates, this mess would have changed at lease 6-10 years ago.

rate for black students was 64.2 percent; The rate for Hispanics remains below 55 percent

Wow! this is horrible!!!! If I only had a success rate of 55% at my job I would be fired immediatly and good ol Ron is congradulating this? He needs to be issuing an apology for doing a horrible job ... that is only going to get worse!!
