WILMINGTON, N.C. — Wake County's interim school superintendent is in the running to head up another school system.

Valita Quattlebaum, a spokeswoman for New Hanover County Schools, said Monday that Donna Hargens is one of three final candidates being considered for the superintendent position there.

Hargens has been overseeing daily operations for the Wake County Public School System since March, when former Superintendent Del Burns was placed on administrative leave.

The Wake school system is in the middle of its own search for Burns' permanent replacement, and it recently hired an international firm to conduct a nationwide search.

Hargens, who is currently the school district's chief academic officer, hasn't indicated whether she is interested in the job permanently.

She started in Wake County in 1989 as an assistant principal at Millbrook High School. She took over as chief academic officer in 2006.
