RALEIGH, N.C. — For many students, summer is a great time to explore a new hobby or work on a favorite one. Some students are nurturing their inner artist in a program at Artspace in Raleigh.

“When I first came here, it was just a camp my mom signed me up to. But now I really learned you can be a good artist if you try because before I wasn’t very good,” sixth-grader Jenine Black said.

Children are taught by professional artists in the community. The classes are three hours a day, five days a week. Organizers say it is meant to be intense.

“We also take them outside the building for some classes where they’re painting a scene from nature,” Artspace Executive Director Mary Poole said.

The works of art created at the camp are often good enough to frame and hang on the wall.

“When you finish, you really feel good,” Jenine said.

Week-long camps are offered all summer for $125. Artspace has scholarships available for those with financial need.

For students applying to art school, college preparatory courses are also offered.
