Raleigh mayor wants details on community schools plan
In a letter Wednesday, Mayor Charles Meeker asks for racial and economic data on students for the current and proposed school assignments.
Posted — Updated"We understand that while such plan has not been presented publicly to the school board, a plan has been presented privately to selected individuals," Meeker wrote.
A majority of members on the school board want to move away from the district's decade-old student assignment policy that buses students to ensure socio-economic balance at schools across the county.
Those in favor of the resolution have said they will develop a policy of community-based assignments, which will allow more students to attend school closer to home.
Board member John Tedesco will make a presentation Friday on how he will lead the 9-15-month planning process.
Meeker also wrote in his that he wants the city, county and school board to work together to study the costs of the new assignment plan:
"Our council is concerned that the proposed reassignment plan will lead to higher taxes and more public debt," he said.
Tedesco's presentation is at 4 p.m. Friday at the Wake County Public School System's administration building, 3600 Wake Forest Road. The presentation will be carried live on WRAL.com.
