Wake commissioners weigh in on community-based schools
The Wake County Board of Commissioners on Monday took a stand against the school board's plan to set up community-based assignments.

The Wake County School Board recently voted 5-4 to move away from an economic diversity policy that has been part of student assignment decisions for a decade.
The school system bases diversity calculations on the number of students in a school who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, which are federally subsidized and depend on family income.
Opponents of community-based assignments say they fear it will lead to re-segregation. Newly elected school board members, who voted in favor of the change, insist that they have no plans to segregate students.
