NCCU breaks ground on $70M in campus construction
N.C. Central broke ground Wednesday on a nursing building, a residence hall and a parking deck that together will cost about $70 million.

The 65,000-square-foot nursing building will include a 250-seat auditorium, a large skills lab and a family room for students with children. Officials said the building should be completed in July 2011, allowing N.C. Central to help address the statewide shortage of nurses and increase diversity in the field.
Last year, 509 students were enrolled in the university's nursing program, a 4 percent increase from 2007-08.
The four-story, 125,000-square-foot Chidley North Residence Hall, to be built at the intersection of Alston Avenue and Lawson Street, will house 520 students in suite-style accommodations. It will also include staff apartments, a multi-purpose classroom, a computer lab and offices, and construction is expected to be completed by May 2011.
The Latham Parking Deck, which is expected to open in August, will provide 750 parking spots. The ground level also will include space for a coffee shop, a bookstore and a police substation.
The projects were part of state bond issues previously approved by voters.
