Leader of Spring Valley Elementary is Durham principal of year

— Barbara Parker, principal of Spring Valley Elementary School, is the 2012 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year for Durham Public Schools, the district announced Tuesday morning.

Parker, who has been with Durham schools for more than 30 years, will compete with other local award winners in the North Central Region of the state. The state winner will be named next spring.

Parker taught special education at Southern High School before she moved into administration. She served as an assistant principal at Bethesda Elementary School and Carrington Middle School and as principal at R.N. Harris Elementary School before joining Spring Valley Elementary in 2010.
