Cary Elementary School
Michelle Cunningham & our TAs, too!
Our teachers are really wonderful. They have 8 boys with autism – which is the same as having 24 "typical" boys running around them at all times – mostly all nonverbal. They work on our kids' goals (IEPs) as well as taking the time to individualize the classroom to best suit each child's strenghts and weaknesses.
Our teachers have so much work they are required to do above and beyond normal class work. They have 8 children's IEPs – each of which involve tons and tons of paperwork to discuss goals and show how each goal is going to be met with multi-stage benchmarks.
They have to deal with not only differing abilities in the class but also different diet needs. Many of our children have food allergies and seizure problems as well as the fact that nearly none of them are potty trained as well.
Our teachers have their hearts in the right place. They choose to teach our kids – not just any kids that come their way but kids with autism.
I would go absolutly NUTS if it were not for my son's teachers. His life, and our lives, have improved 200% and without them I am not exactly sure where my son or we would be.
We would LOVE it if you would give them a warm pat on the back from us for all they do!
