Low income families and HDTV

WAKE COUNTY — My nephew Justin is working with a local heating & air company this summer. He was over last night and commented that my house was slightly warm. I try to conserve when I can, and have the a/c set on 79. I also use a fan and dehumidifier that helps a lot.

Anyways, Justin then told me that the company he works for has the contract for area low-income apartments, which are mostly section-8. Last week he replaced air filters in at least 50-60 apartments. He told me you wouldn't believe how many big screen tvs these people have. One apartment had over 5 people, each with 3D glasses on, watching a movie. Some have over 60-inch screens and many have 2 or more flat panels. When he went to the outside dumpster to discard old air filters, he said he noticed at least 3-4 boxes which contained HDTV sets... vizio, samsung, panasonic, etc.

My question is: where do low-income people get the money to buy expensive 50-inch tv's?

It would seem if you got money to buy this type of tv, you have money for rent or utilities.
