A Question to Conservatives and Right-Wingers

After reading some of the more recent blogs concerning government spending and research, I formed a very simple question. Conservatives and subscribers to the right-wing agenda typically detest the government spending tax dollars on just about any program imaginable. From Stem Cell Research to improving public education, a conservative will generally contest any legislation that would make such endeavors possible. Their usual reasoning as to why they're against it invariable involves the concept of saving money and not spending on frivolous projects. Now here is where I'll agree with that ideology. I think it's absurd to spend limited cash and resources on things that are wasteful. I don't find educational advancement, scientific research and such to be wastes, but I understand the basic Conservative principle behind saving money. This is where my question developed.

If Conservatives are so worried about saving money, even in the face of positive advancement like education, then what are they wanting to save it for?

I hear countless Conservative pundits and politicians spout off about "we need to save our money", yet I never hear them say what they're saving the money for! Are they wanting to hold onto it because of some program we the People have never heard of? Is it simply because they're hoarders? Why? Don't they understand that for anything in society to work, resources must be spent to kickstart development and progress? Again, saving money is good. Yet, even saved money is eventually spent. What do they want to spend our money on? Can someone who subscribes to this concept give me an honest answer? My question is genuine and not loaded with any contempt. I'm a middle of the road sort of guy who's simply curious and wants to know.

*UPDATE*

I want to thank the following people who have provided a clear, straightforward answer to my question.
