Say WHAT? What Language do you Speak?

Posted Updated

At some point in your life, you've probably been told you "talk funny" or "differently" than other people. Maybe you told someone else that they talk funny. What language do you speak?

If you go to any public place nowadays, you're likely to hear different dialects and accents. Sure, you hear many languages -- English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Hindi, just to name a few. But have you ever stopped to think about the "brands" of English the United States and North Carolina, in particular, have to offer?

Around North Carolina, there's everything from the "hoi-toiders" on the coast to the Cherokee in the mountains, and a seemingly endless number of dialects in-between.

What's your "brand" of English? Do you sound like a Yankee -- Philadelphian maybe? Of course, you may have a Southern accent -- Louisiana, anybody? Don't forget about the midwest, southwest, and west coast! There's Alaska & Hawaii, too!

Go ahead and give some examples! For instance: do ya hova stip ruf o'er ya hose (do you have a steep roof on top of your house)?
