— Fire damaged a commercial building Wednesday night in Smithfield that was undergoing major renovations.

Officials responded to the fire at 8th and Wilkens streets around 10:45 p.m., which is adjacent to Johnston Memorial Hospital. Heavy smoke and flames were visible when the firefighters arrived.

Smithfield Fire Chief John Blanton said the fire was controlled quickly, but the building suffered extensive damage.

Blanton said a new phone system and now flooring were installed earlier that day.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
