If your kids have ever wanted to try a tri, as they say, there's a new three-race youth triathlon series in the Triangle.

Kids Tri NC, a non-profit that produces triathlon clinics, camps and other programs for kids in North Carolina, and Triangle Multisport, which provides coaching and training for kids and adults, have launched the series after the success of the Tar Heel Youth Triathlon in October. Nearly 100 kids raced in short and long course events at Homestead Aquatic Center in Chapel Hill for that race.

The first event of the new 2014 series was held last weekend. Future races are scheduled for July 27 at the Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough and Sept. 28 at the UNC Wellness Center in northwest Cary.

The courses are based on a child's age. For kids ages 6 to 10, the course features a 100-yard pool swim, two-mile bike ride through neighborhood streets and a 1K run. Kids aged 11 to 15 compete in a 200-yard swim, a four-mile bike ride and a 2K run.

All participants who finish get a finisher's medal. Prizes are awarded for the top three overall male and female finishers along with the top three male and female finishers in each six age groups.
