North Raleigh has a new playground.

Abbotts Creek Park and Community Center opened this month at 9950 Durant Rd. The 26,000-square-foot community center features a gym, multipurpose room, fitness room and classrooms. Outside, is a playground designed for kids ages 5 to 12 with a shade structure and rubber floor.

I haven't been yet, but the city shared some pictures of the new playground, which includes a slide, swings, climbing pieces and some playground games. You can see it in the image gallery!

The park is built on the former North Wake Landfill's "borrow site" where soil had been stored. It's also home to an elementary school, which opened in August.

The project was paid for by two items in the voter-approved 2007 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum: $9 million for a Northeast Raleigh Community Center and $2 million for the Northeast Raleigh Active Recreation Partnership, which is intended to develop outdoor active recreation in northeast Raleigh.
