New NC Pre-K director quits amid questions over background

Published: 2013-02-07 12:28:00
Updated: 2013-02-07 18:26:33

McCrory administration appointee Dianna Lightfoot now says she will not take the job leading the state's pre-kindergarten program.

Lightfoot's appointment was announced Tuesday. But questions were raised about potential conflict of interest because she founded and headed an organization that advocated against publicly funded early childhood education programs like NC Pre-K.

On Wednesday night, Lightfoot deleted her Twitter account, in which she referred to Hillary Clinton as a "butch" and questioned whether ultrasonic waves had caused the 2011 Japan earthquake. A Facebook account that remained online referred to gay rights protesters as "bigots."

A YouTube video also emerged of Lightfoot speaking at a tea party rally in the Stokes County town of Pinnacle in September, equating the Affordable Care Act with "enslavement" and urging the audience to rise up against it.

Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Julie Henry released the following statement shortly after noon Thursday:

"Dianna Lightfoot was scheduled to start at HHS next week as Director of Child Development and Early Education. Ms. Lightfoot informed Secretary (Aldona) Wos this morning that she does not wish to be a distraction to the department and will pursue other opportunities. Secretary Wos accepted this decision."

WRAL News also has learned that Lightfoot might have voted improperly in three North Carolina elections.

State law requires voters to register at the address where they live, but elections records show Lightfoot gave the address of a UPS store in Winston-Salem as her residence.

Lightfoot hasn't responded to requests for an explanation.

Likewise, DHHS and the Governor's Office haven't explained the vetting process they used to select Lightfoot – or other job candidates. The information about her background and social media posts was easily available through a Google search.

Just the beginning...to think...4 more years of this.

"@Morrigan - ha! with no babies there will definately be no one to take care of them come retirement!...."

I hope you're being sarcastic, but in case you're not, those babies might remember being shunted off to strangers by someone who "loved" them, and do the same to those devoted, self-sacrificing, loving, wise parents.

"Perhaps because white conservatives were never slaves it becomes a bit inappropriate."

Neither was any black American who's alive today.

McCrory has some good ideas but his follow-through seems to be lacking sorely. We desperately need a strong governor to rein in the out of control Legislature and General Assembly. Many North Carolinians voted for McCrory with the idea he would be willing and capable of doing it – But we are now beginning to wonder.

She couldn't have handled a 4 year old.

Wow... this woman should have never been hired in the first place. Could have saved the state time and money. If she works for the Governor he should have known her background before she was hired!

What's wrong with this lady!? People have a right to Government-paid-for babysitters! And they have a right to Government-paid-for cellphones! And unemployment benefits should NEVER end if you can't find a job paying what you used to make.

BIGGER Government is a GOOD thing. People CANNOT take responsibility for themselves. The rich will pay for it all! Tax them into poverty! The Government should employee EVERYONE! We don't need the private sector!

You can't expect people to have educate their pre-K kids themselves! That's asking too much! People need someplace to warehouse their pre-K kids so they can have some time off.

Face it. We can't do ANYTHING! The Government must be our Overlords and take care of us from cradle to grave! We are HELPLESS without them!

Thank heavens!

I like her way of thinking on most of her issues.

If she was a Democrat then this story wouldn't even be reported

"This is why party politics is killing our nation."

Well stated....but not just killing the nation. Its bleeding pockets in the process.

Why pick someone from, of all places South Carolina and Alabama? North Carolina Republicans have fought for 100 years to be in a position to direct state government. We finally get there and the DHHS Secretary decides there aren't people in this state who are qualified for this position. Maybe Wos isn't the leader that DHHS needs! We don't need right wing-nuts who say no to everything nor do we need left wing-nuts who think we should model our system after the Russian educational system. We need someone who has a common sense, thoughtful approach.

Why let this stop someone from gaining political office? Look at all of the things others have done and stayed or gotten in office.

Morrigan - there are plenty of people being kept as slaves in America - especially in the world of prostitution. There are citizens who were enslaved in Africa and escaped to this country.

But don't bother educating yourself to slavery in America and around the world since it doesn't fit your narrative.

No problems with Turbo Tax Cheat Tim Geitner of any corrupt Democrat but let one (R) even say something the libes don't like and they are all over it. They probably still think Johnny Edwards is Presidential material. The Pre-K program is a glorified state sponsored babysitting program. I believe in the impotance of the learning in the first 3 years of live and early childhood education but that should be provided by parents and family one on one with each child for it to be most EFFECTIVE not provided as group think by the state.

"Just the beginning...to think...4 more years of this."

I'm just glad we're out of the 20 years of Dem rule.

Raised Down East

You can say whatever you want and always have been, but as I taught my children, there are consequence for your actions and your words, think before you speak and if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all. Works that way in the corporate world, why should government be any different. What she was spewing is pure hate

troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[3] The noun troll may also refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted."

All of you that are defending her, her mouth was full of mean spirited and name calling, not one constructive suggestion on ways to improve things, just slash and call names. Didn't your parents teach you as a child not to call people names?

Sounds like my kind of woman, At least she has some conseritive view and out looks,, She was not for this job,, but there are places she could help,,, Maybe at a welfare office to clean it out

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that this fine patriot appointed by Pat McCrory has been "Attacked by the liberal left-wing socialist state-owned media".....she ain't guilty of saying all that nutty stuff, the liberals made it all up, and they're just JEALOUS that this "strong, intelligent conservative woman" was gonna be Pre-K Czar.

They did the SAME thing to poor $arah.........

I voted for McCory and am already starting to regret it.

"They don't care. As long as you have a R in front of your name welcome aboard, and here is your pay raise."

That's the way it should be. We won, remember? You had your turn and got us no where.

"They don't care. As long as you have a R in front of your name welcome aboard, and here is your pay raise."

And that's the only reason it IS a story. Because of her "R".

"For me her ideas and the things I've read about her sounds so-far-out-there! She would be a dangerous person in this position..."LEX

But better than any democrat. 4Strikes

4Strikes, do you honestly believe a person's political party is that important? I'd want someone in this role who cares about kids and would do a good job....irrespective of their political affiliation. It's sad that you place that much emphasis on a political party.

Pre-K is nothing more than state-funded daycare.

TV_D whatever - sounds very hateful.

Misleading headline. You can't quit a job you never started.

Really? A Pre-k coordinator candidate needs this much attention.

Now there's a red flag for you!! Even Art "Kingfish" Pope could not save her!!!

I wonder if she got a raise before she resigned?

Yeah, yeah. Only republicans get skewered by their own antics on WRAL. Right. Uh huh. Sure thing.

This woman is nuts

Amen, alshomes! Too bad we have to "hide" our opinions and morals if we want to get a government job these days. Pitiful.

TO: TV_D_Seat

In reply to your post on> February 7, 2013 2:27 p.m. I must ask,

Ms. Lightfoot, glad to know the Gov called you and told you fail and are not acceptable for the position.

We are HELPLESS without them!TV_D_Seat

No, just crazy nuts who don't see the good some of these programs bring to our society. But who cares as long as the people who think that all people want is a handout feel good story of the tea party makes them feel all warm inside. The people did not bankrupt this country politicians & big business got to greedy and it all crumbled. But go ahead and blame the people all you want see were that gets you. Funny how it was a Democratic President who balanced the budget & no recent Republican controlled government has. But the conservative fantasy land is ironic isn't it.

"If she was a Democrat then this story wouldn't even be reported"

You are exactly right because there would be NO story. NO Democrat would have these crazy, whacked-out views!!!

Did you expect better picks? At least this woman had the decency to bow out. We still have a man running DENR who is a climate science denier and believes fossil fuels are a renewable resource.

Heckuva job, Pat

"If she was a Democrat then this story wouldn't even be reported"

Any basis for this speculation whatsoever? Or it it just more whining about the "MSM" and those darn facts they keep reporting?

To: Free2bme

Your post was BRILLIANT "4strikes this is why we need more Democrats in the NC GA. Get with it, this is the 21st century. The tea party/GOP ideas are obsolete and full of hate. We do not need people like this anywhere in government and it is sad that she was even appointed. Her background was no secret and I think most of the Republicans in this state agree with her and thought no one would do or say anything"

I agree; if she was a lib/dem, this wouldn't be reported whatsoever! And for those who post things online anywhere and think they can then have any kind of in-the-public-eye position; you're wrong - people will dig up your skeletons, derr!

To: 4strikes

YOU WROTE If it had been a democrat, you wouldn't hear a peep out of the media.

ME TO YOU Since Democrats and moderate Republicans are not ignorant enough to think the way Lightfoot does, it could not have ever been a Democrat

If this was a democrat the comments would still be the same. WRAL would still report it. Why not post solutions instead of pointing fingers, blaming and name calling.

"For me her ideas and the things I've read about her sounds so-far-out-there! She would be a dangerous person in this position..."LEX

"But better than any democrat".

4Strikes - If you're going to comment on what I said please include the last statement. I also said and I quote "I would not want anyone like her making any decision concerning my child." So, let me express that further, I don't care what political party they belong to, this way of think is of no benefit to another human being.

Ultrasonic waves, lol.

I'm glad she quit! Now maybe they will get somebody in there with some sense.

The irony is that Lightfoot learned what happens when people rise up against a government appointment. Now she can play the victim card when she asks Art Pope to give her little group a grant.

Another McCrory failure. There will no doubt be many more to come. This guy is going to make Bev Perdue look like governor of the year. She couldn't even manage to pack this many failures into her first two months and she tried hard.

Exactly beachmama, that's what she gets for being so ignorant. Why would they have her be head of something she thought shouldn't exist? No thanks!

Wow! We certainly dodged that bullet. McCrory, what are you doing???!!!
