DURHAM, N.C. — The combatants are chosen — and it's game on.

Josh Gabay and Anthony Rodriquez are the core of Duke University's new esports team.

They're ready to test their skills this Sunday at the Durham Armory.

Video gaming, or esports, is perhaps the fastest growing sport in the world.

The Triangle Esports Championship is riding the wave of interest.

“More people watch online, or more viewers watching an Overwatch game, than an NFL game,” said Jatovi McDuffie, the event’s director.

McDuffie said the championship huge for gamers and game developers.

It’s big for Lenovo gaming systems made in the Triangle, McDuffie said.

And he said fans follow their favorite esports stars and big esports team rivalries.

A new team rivalry isn't so new in the Triangle.

“Carolina versus Duke: Smash Brothers, Ultimate Battle,” McDuffie said.

The Duke-UNC grudge match takes place 11 days before the schools’ next clash on the basketball court.

“I'm just fortunate to see that we're also brewing another side of the rivalry, which is through esports,” Gabay said.

For Kramden Institute and the Triangle Literacy Council, the event means a big boost for their mission.

“All the net proceeds will go to fund digital inclusion and literacy efforts around the Triangle,” said Michael Abensour, executive director of Kramden Institute.

The championship starts 11 a.m. Sunday in the Durham Armory, at 212 Foster Street.

Fans can watch it online or in person.
