New Center to Incubate Small Businesses in Eastern N.C.
The opening of a small-business development center in downtown Wilson marked a big day for business in eastern North Carolina.

The Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments (UCPCG) held the grand opening of the Business Development Center at 121 Nash St. on Monday. Former Gov. Jim Hunt and U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, a Democrat who represents the state's 1st District, attended the ceremony.
The center will offer affordable lease space, advice, mentoring and other services to entrepreneurs. It will assist in starting up new operations and expanding existing businesses in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton and Wilson counties.
The UCPCG relocated its offices from Rocky Mount into the new center. The Wilson Downtown Development Corp. and Wilson Technical Community College's Small Business Center also moved into the building.
Also supporting the Business Development Center are SCORE, Small Business Technology Development Center, Barton College, East Carolina University, the federal Small Business Administration and the Regional Entrepreneurial Network.
UCPCG raised more than $1.5 million from public and private sources to renovate the old Belk's building.
