New cedar point coaster to be tallest, fastest hybrid in the world

Posted August 21

Okay, adrenaline junkies! Have I got some big news for you. Cedar Point just announced their plans for their newest coaster, Steel Vengeance. The coaster will be a record-breaking ride, as it is going to be the tallest hybrid coaster that has an initial drop that is higher than 200 feet.

Yes, 200 feet.

The hybrid coaster will take the place of the Mean Streak wooden roller coaster, formally located in the Frontiertown section of Cedar Point. (Mean Streak opened in 1991 and closed in 2016).

Like other hybrid coasters, Steel Vengeance has a wood and steel design. Hybrid coasters have a traditional wood coaster structure, but have steel tracks. This allows engineers to keep the look and feel of a traditional ‘woodie,’ without having to worry about the wear and tear that can come with wooden coasters.

Cedar Point’s new ‘hyper-hybrid’ coaster

The 5,740 feet long Steel Vengeance is called a ‘hyper’ hybrid because of that initial 200-foot drop. A hypercoaster is any coaster that reaches a height or features a drop of 200 feet, and the term was actually coined by Cedar Point back in 1989 when they debuted their Magnum XL-200.

The Steel Vengeance will also set the record of setting the most airtime on any roller coaster in the world (27.2 seconds of total airtime). On a coaster, air-time is defined as the time that riders experience weightless or negative G-forces.

No wonder people are so excited to experience this awesome new ride:

Although some people have complained about the name of the coaster:

Well, I guess ‘Steel Vengeance’ does kind of sound like a romance novel or role playing game. But, hey, when you want to pee your pants as you hover 200 feet in the air, does it really matter the park calls it?

You can ‘test’ the ride with a POV video that will let you experience all the twists, turns and exciting drops:

What do you think? Would you be brave enough to go on the Steel Vengeance?
