— When Carowinds amusement park opens for the season Saturday, it will include a new "giga coaster" rated the world's tallest and fastest in its class.

The Fury 325 will propel riders at speeds of up to 95 miles per hour along 6,602 feet of track.

"The opening of Fury 325 gives Carowinds two of the 10 tallest rollercoasters in North America,” noted Mike Fehnel, Carowinds vice president and general manager.

The new thrill is part of a $50 million, multi-year upgrade to the park that includes:

  • A new parking toll entrance with 900 additional parking spaces
  • The SlingShot – a catapult that tosses riders 300 feet in the air
  • New dining options throughout the park, and
  • Taste of the Carolinas food festival offering a sampling of the best of what the Carolinas have to offer on weekends April 18 through May 17.

Technically, any StrataCoaster (height over 400 ft) is also a GigaCoaster (height over 300 feet.) So this is not only not the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster, it's also not the tallest and fastest Gigacoaster.

Check your title. This is the 5th tallest roller coaster in the world and tied for the 6th fastest. The fastest is Formula Rossa at 149 MPH, an accelerator in the UAE, and the tallest is still Kingda Ka, Six Flags at 456 feet. Some of us a are coaster addicts and keep track of these things. The most coasters that can be found in one place is still Cedar Point.
