10-digit dialing coming soon
The Triad area of Greensboro, Winston‑Salem, High Point, Kernersville, Burlington, North Wilkesboro, Roxboro and Asheboro is growing so fast and adding so many mobile phones that new numbers soon will be issued a new area code: 743.

As it did in the Triangle, the North Carolina Utilities Commission will “overlay” the new 743 numbers in the same geographical area as the current 336 area code, requiring 10-digit dialing (area code included) for even local calls.

Callers can begin appending the area code for local calls on Saturday and 10-digit dialing will become mandatory on April 22, 2016.

Businesses are advised to update stationery and business cards and individuals should update any programmed numbers in speed dial, alarm and security systems, mobile phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and similar functions.
