Nearly a decade in the making, Apex Nature Park and Seymour Athletic Fields will open to the public this weekend

The town will host a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, with music, food, disc golf, tennis demonstrations and more.

The 160-acre park at the corner of Apex Barbecue and Evans roads includes an amphitheater with room for about 400 people; an 18 hole disc golf course; about three miles of walking and jogging trails; two shelters with restrooms that will be available for rental; youth and adult lighted tennis courts; playground; two-acre dog park; sand volleyball court; and basketball courts.

John Brown, the town's parks director, said officials hope to hold regional and state tournaments at the disc golf course, a first for the town. The amphitheater will host concerts, theater in the park, environmental education classes and, this fall and possibly earlier, family-friendly movies.

Brown said officials had hoped to open the park earlier, but this winter's bad weather has slowed work.

"With all this rain and all the ice and cold weather, we are going to need every single day we can get to open by the 29th," he said.

The park is at 2600 Evans Rd., Apex.

If you do not like dogs being dogs I would offer the suggestion that you stay in the park and out of the DOG Park.

It is after all only 2 acres of the 160 available. Seem reasonable?

Dogs running loose in an off leash dog park, acting like dogs? Oh the horror.

I'd rather step in a pile then see multiple bags of Bo Jangles and Popeyes bags thrown everywhere.

The problem is Apex is building nothing but high priced homes around the place. 550K and up. Where's the mixed use nearby and homes that are 200K and down. Shame on Apex for not creating diversity.

Stay on that idea considering Dix property is still being pushed to be a park.

Yeah, hate it when they are in the dog park, acting like dogs.

So agree with Einventor. Nothing makes a nice park bad quicker than careless dog owners let their wildebeasts run loose and do their business without cleaning up.

How about banning people that think about banning dog's?
