Nearly a decade in the making, Apex Nature Park and Seymour Athletic Fields will open to the public this weekend

The town will host a grand opening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, with music, food, disc golf, tennis demonstrations and more.

The 160-acre park at the corner of Apex Barbecue and Evans roads includes an amphitheater with room for about 400 people; an 18 hole disc golf course; about three miles of walking and jogging trails; two shelters with restrooms that will be available for rental; youth and adult lighted tennis courts; playground; two-acre dog park; sand volleyball court; and basketball courts.

John Brown, the town's parks director, said officials hope to hold regional and state tournaments at the disc golf course, a first for the town. The amphitheater will host concerts, theater in the park, environmental education classes and, this fall and possibly earlier, family-friendly movies.

Brown said officials had hoped to open the park earlier, but this winter's bad weather has slowed work.

"With all this rain and all the ice and cold weather, we are going to need every single day we can get to open by the 29th," he said.

The park is at 2600 Evans Rd., Apex.
