Dollar General opens in downtown Raleigh

File this one away for the next time you're in downtown Raleigh with kids and have run out of diapers, snacks, drinks or are dealing with a broken shoe (I've been there) ...

A new Dollar General opened a month or two ago at the corner of Blount and Davie streets. The store - about two blocks from Marbles Kids Museum and across the street from ArtSpace - offers just about anything you'd need during a trip downtown at prices that are comparable to what you'd find inside a suburban Dollar General.

Small ICEEs are $1. Fresh fruit cups are $2. A pack of size 3 Pampers are $10. A pair of flip flops are $2 - or two for $3. There also are wipes, all kinds of crackers and snacks, bottled drinks, coffee, some packaged foods and just about anything else you'd find at a typical Dollar General.

I love the fancy restaurants and high-end coffee shops that are opening up around downtown. But it's nice to see something practical open up where you can find things you actually need and don't have to break the bank just to get a snack for the kids. You could even run a quick errand here after a trip to Marbles.

The Dollar General is at 149 E. Davie St. in the Edison Lofts building. It's about a 10 minute walk from the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and about a five minute walk from Marbles and the Read With Me children's book store, another great addition to downtown Raleigh for families. It's also on the same block as Treat, a great locally owned ice cream shop that serves up delicious Maple View Farms ice cream.
