RALEIGH, N.C. — Nearly 11,000 motorists were ticketed in North Carolina for safety violations over Memorial Day weekend, state transportation officials said Tuesday.

The tickets were part of the “Click It or Ticket” safety campaign to promote seat belt use.

“The safety of everyone who travels our roadways is always a top priority,” North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata said. “Our first in the nation ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign reminds us that while we’ve made significant progress we still have work to do encourage every driver and passenger to buckle up.”

NCDOT officials said citations were issued during 8,482 checkpoints and stepped-up patrols across the state.

Governor’s Highway Safety Program and NCDOT have also launched a social media campaign to increase awareness. “Safety selfie” pictures were posted on social media sites, including one posted by Gov. Pat McCrory.
