NE Democratic Party leader asked to resign, posted FB comments about GOP baseball shooting

That's after she posted on Facebook that she didn't much care about Congressman Steve Scalise being shot on Wednesday.

Those posts are now deleted, but not before FOX 42 got to see them.

"Watching the congressman crying on live tv abt the trauma they experienced. Y is this so funny tho?"

That's the comment Chelsey Gentry-Tipton left on Facebook. She's the chairwoman for the Nebraska Democratic Party Black Caucus.

Here's another comment she wrote: "Hard to be empathetic towards those that have no empathy for us. The very people that push pro NRA legislation in efforts to pad their pockets with complete disregard for human life. Yeah, having a hard time feeling bad for them."

It's these comments that led the Nebraska Democratic Party to ask for Gentry-Tipton's resignation.

State Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kleeb says that this situation is being handled as "internal party business...republicans and democrats should be able to go to a baseball practice and not be shot at."

She said it's "troubling that anyone would make that kind of comment" and it "shows the ugly political divide."

Through another Facebook post Gentry-Tipton said, "As a victim of gun violence, I understand that today's events are deeply troubling. I don't condone or find the humor in what happened...at this point, I am not resigning from my role as chairwoman. I believe that my post was taken out of context. I believe that there are people in the party that benefit from taking my post out of context."

Chairwoman Kleeb says if Gentry-Tipton does not send in her resignation then it's up to the Black Caucus to decide if it removes her from the position.

Kleeb says Gentry-Tipton has been with the Black Caucus since last June.

FOX 42 did try to contact Gentry-Tipton several times on Thursday by sending her a Facebook message, calling her, reaching out to her where she works and at her home.

Gentry-Tipton did not respond.
