— The North Carolina Department of Transportation wants to hear from the public on a proposal to allow trucks with twin trailers on a portion of N.C. Highway 147 in Durham.

Under state law, twin trailers are currently prohibited on the stretch of the highway between Interstate 540 and T.W. Alexander Drive. The department has determined the road can safely accommodate the vehicles, and doing so would meet a public need.

The department will hold public hearings on the proposal in both Wake and Durham counties if enough citizens are interested. Residents can request the hearing by email at lavery@ncdot.gov, or by mail to Lisa Avery, traffic safety project engineer; 1561 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C., 27699.

The deadline to submit requests is Oct. 19.

Smells like a set up getting ready for the gas companies fracking operations.

No way no how should they be allowed. They're very dangerous. They still allow them to use recap tires that litter our road way and create driving hazards. The tax payers are the one paying to have them removed. If anything, they need to start getting tougher on enforcement for these big rigs.

QUESTION WILL THE USE OF DOUBLE TRAILERS ON THE STATES HIGHWAYS LOWER CONSUMER COST FOR SHIPING AS IT RELATES TO . BUYING GROCERYS BEING SHIPED TO THE STORE OUTLETS THEY USE THE COST OF FUEL TO INCREASE THE COST OF GROCERYS ONCE BEFORE AN THEY HAVE NEVER LOWER THE PRICES SINCE THAT TIME EITHER THANK YOU

i personnaly view this as just another sell out by the NCDOT TO THE PRIVATE TRUCKING INDUSTRY IN THIS STATE FOR THEY EITHER BUY TOO THRU POLITICS ALWAYS GET THEIR WAY EITHER BY HOOK OR BY CROOK AN IT DOESNT MATTER TO THEM AS LONG AS THEY ARE GETTING THEIR WAY . SUGGESTION TO THE NCDOT WHY NOT JUST SELL THE ROADWAY TO THEM AS A BUSNESS VENTURE OF THE NCDOT STATE GOVERNMENT THEY ARE PARTERNING TOGETHER ON EVERYTHING ELSE INCLUDING WHAT STATE PERSONNEL TO KEEPOR WHICH ONE TO FIRE AN THEY ARE GETTING THIER WAY IF ANY STATE EMPLOYEE OPPOSES THEM IN THEIR EFFORTS THANK YOU

i bet its the nc turnpike authority that just wants the revenue of more trucks on this road that is the "public need"

As long as they are safely driven I have no problem with it; BUT how can we be assured that they will be safely driven-especially during bad road conditions. Then there is the stupid driver factor that would cut them off too quickly and perhaps cause a larger accident than if it was just 1 trailer.

There on all the other highways that are the same size. So that means the truckers have to waste fuel to go around the area. It will not be an issue for them to drive on that 1 mile stretch of 147. from i-40 to TW. Now the new section of 147 from I-40 to 540 is a lot wider and it really won't be an issue. Pluss its a toll raod. A little more money....right?

Great, not like there aren't enough accidents in that area already (or bad pavement).

I think its a terrible idea, but it will do no good to oppose it. The truckers association will get their way.
