DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University canceled classes Thursday due to a major power outage, officials announced.

University officials said the outage was affecting most of campus, including the cafeteria. It was caused by a malfunction at a substation.

Employees were told they could use paid-leave for any absences Thursday.

The athletic department had alternative arrangements for O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium, and the scheduled football game against  Johnson C. Smith will proceed as scheduled at 7 p.m.

Classes will resume Friday.
