Leaders at North Carolina Central University shared the sad news on Friday that Attorney Browne C. Lewis, dean of the NCCU School of Law, died Thursday while attending a conference in Colorado.

Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D., wrote, "It is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden passing of Atty. Browne C. Lewis." According to Akinleye, Lewis was attending a conference with colleagues this week.

Lewis, who joined NCCU in July 2020, was extremely passionate about social justice, Akinleye said, writing, "Her vision was clear from Day One in leading the school as one that provides unique opportunities for diverse, talented future attorneys to be practice-ready practitioners in their chosen legal careers ... enrollment has consistently increased year-over-year at a time when other law schools saw steady decreases. Additionally, Bar passage rates have been above average."

Details will be shared in the coming days regarding how the university will honor Lewis.

"I would ask that you pray for members Dean Lewis’ family, as well as students, faculty and staff in the School of Law and the entire Legal Eagle community," Akinleye wrote.
