NC winner nabs $1M in Powerball; jackpot climbs to $360M

Posted February 5, 2015

— There was no big winner in the $317 million Powerball drawing Wednesday night, but someone in North Carolina managed to snag a cool $1 million in the game.

North Carolina Education Lottery officials said Thursday that a Powerball ticket sold at the Handy Mart in Mount Olive matched all five white balls in the drawing.

The winner, who beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million, has 180 days to claim the $1 million prize. The lucky ticketholder is the fourth million-dollar Powerball winner in North Carolina since December, officials said.

Meanwhile, the jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball drawing has climbed to $360 million.

The jackpot would be worth $250.5 million if claimed as a lump sum.

I'd LOVE to have to pay the tax on a million dollar winning lottery ticket!

Does anyone know if it is public knowledge how many tickets are sold to a particular game? For example, how many tickets were sold in NC for the last Powerball drawing? It would be interesting to see how many tickets were sold and how many winners there were and the dollar amounts. Maybe WRAL could investigate. Hmmm…maybe not. They carry the drawings on their station. lol

I think you mean the sweepstakes parlor. The only casino that I know of is on the Cherokee reservation.

Too bad that person will not be able to keep the entire 1 million. Once the Feds and the State get done they will have stolen a large chunk of that money.

Could somebody tell me why casinos are springing up in NC. I thought they are illegal. This casino not far from my house has been closed down twice and they keep reopening.
