— A North Carolina high school teacher says he has been placed on leave after students say he stepped on an American flag as part of a history lesson.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/2d33Loj) Massey Hill Classical High School teacher Lee Francis said he was informed of his status by the Cumberland County Schools human resources department. Francis said he's scheduled to meet with system officials on Thursday to discuss the incident stemming from a lesson in his history class.

News media outlets quote students as saying Francis asked students for a lighter or scissors, and when no one produced them, he put the flag on the floor and stomped on it. Reports quote Francis as saying on his Facebook page that he was discussing a court case involving flag desecration.

To play the devils advocate here--and as a history teacher of 27 years, this young man was teaching according to the NC Standard Course of Study, which commands that the Amendments to the Constitution be taught. The problem is that he did it wrong. There are limits to the Bill of Rights--including the First Amendment---they are not absolute. I taught those same Amendments, giving both the positive and negative limits. He chose to use a teaching technique that was extreme--but the federal law allows for desecration of the flag. Not a very popular method today, but legal. What he did was upsetting to many people understandably. But legal. Not the best teaching technique or tool to use. This is illustrative of what has come to pass in this nation---things that are "legal" go completely against the grain of the morality of our country. We allowed this to happen so we have no one but ourselves to blame.
