CONCORD, N.C. — An investigation is underway after a Concord teacher was charged with having a relationship with a high school student.

Katherine Ridenhour, a teacher at Cox Mill High School, is accused of that inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student.

Police said the 17-year-old male is old enough to consent, but Katherine Ridenhour was criminally charged because he’s a student and she’s in a position of authority.

“It’s a little disturbing just thinking a teacher should have been a little more professional,” said parent Joy Bruce.

School leaders saif Ridenhour was hired in August 2016 as a family and consumer science teacher. According to the school’s website, she moved to the district with her husband and also became a JV cheerleading coach. However, school officials say she resigned on Tuesday.

“I assume that was the appropriate action to take, she probably shouldn’t be at the school if she’s going to be doing those things,” Bruce said.

Ridenhour is now facing two counts of indecent liberties with a student. Parents are worried about the learning environment at the school.

The former teacher, Ridenhour, gave a written promise to appear in court.
