RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Mark Martin will be named chairman of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division this Saturday.

Martin, who has served on the Supreme Court since 1999, has already announced plans to run for chief justice in 2014, with the pending retirement of Chief Justice Sarah Parker.

The ABA Judicial Division has more than 4,500 members nationwide in six sections: Appellate Judges Conference, National Conference of Federal Trial Judges, National Conference of State Trial Judges, National Conference of Administrative Law Judiciary, National Conference of Specialized Court Judges and Lawyers Conference.

"Justice Martin has been recognized by his peers across the country as one of the nation’s preeminent appellate jurists, and his election to this position is a tremendous honor for him and a source of pride for North Carolina,” North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Burley Mitchell said in a statement.
