NC soldier among five killed in Afghanistan

A North Carolina solider was among five members of the military who died Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Afghanistan, the U.S. Department of Defense said Sunday.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — A North Carolina solider was among five members of the military who died Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Afghanistan, the U.S. Department of Defense said Sunday. 

Family members said that Spc. Patrick L. Lay II, 21, of Fletcher, N.C., was engaged to be married. His tour of duty would have ended in the spring.

Lay, Spc. Jordan M. Morris, 23, of Stillwater, Okla., Pfc. Rueben J. Lopez, 27, of Williams, Calif., Sgt. Edward J. Frank II, 26, of Yonkers, N.Y., and Spc. Jameel T. Freeman, 26, of Baltimore, Md., were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, N.Y.
