RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Justice on Thursday unveiled an Android app allowing users to stay aware of where registered sex offenders are in their vicinities.

The free North Carolina Sex Offender Registry mobile application, which cost $725 to develop, allows users to search within a 5-mile radius by either GPS location or street address.

They can also sign up for email alerts on specific offenders.

More than 40,000 people have already downloaded a similar version of the application, released last January, for iPhones.

More than 20,000 people are on the sex offender registry.
