— The North Carolina Department of Justice on Thursday unveiled an Android app allowing users to stay aware of where registered sex offenders are in their vicinities.

The free North Carolina Sex Offender Registry mobile application, which cost $725 to develop, allows users to search within a 5-mile radius by either GPS location or street address.

They can also sign up for email alerts on specific offenders.

More than 40,000 people have already downloaded a similar version of the application, released last January, for iPhones.

More than 20,000 people are on the sex offender registry.

There are free apps out there and have been for years. With the exact same information.

This app is free and on my iPhone is a lot better than some of the others that claim to do the same.

When will they add violent offenders to the list? Shouldn't the public be aware of them as well? It seems 'selective' to require only one group be tracked. Track them all, violent offenders, illegals aliens, criminal politicians.

"Would help if you put a link to the download on Google Play ."

You can put in the name of the app and use the search button. Talk about lazy.

Downloaded it and it didn't work on my Galaxy S3. I'll wait til they get all the bugs out if I decide I actually need this.

"I wonder does the app differentiate between sex offenders who are rapists, child sex offenders, statutory rape (teenagers who screwed up) or the guy caught peeing in the bushes?"

It does when you click on offenses.
