NC readying for New Year's holiday travel
With the Christmas holiday over and New Year's around the corner, another stream of holiday travelers are expected to take to the roads and skies this weekend.
Posted — UpdatedA record number of North Carolinians – more than 2.8 million – are expected to travel 50 miles or more for the Christmas and New Year's holidays combined this year, according to AAA Carolinas. Nine out of 10 of those will drive.
That travel volume represents an increase of 48,500 total travelers compared with last year. AAA National says travelers have more flexibility when holidays fall in the middle of the week, allowing them to start their trip earlier or extend it through the following weekend.
Last year, 37 people died on North Carolina roads during the year-end holiday travel period – 38 percent of those involved a drunk driver, and 43 percent of those who died weren't wearing a seat belt, according to AAA.
Meanwhile, gas prices are about the same this year compared to last year at $3.23 a gallon in North Carolina. The lowest price currently in the Triangle is $3.15 a gallon.
