Posted July 11, 2014

Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock

— The police chief in Fayetteville is offering people who possess an illegal firearm to give them up without the threat of legal action.

Chief Harold Medlock is offering amnesty to anyone who will lay down an illegal firearm. It's part of the city's effort in taking a stand against violence.

Medlock says anyone with an illegal weapon can police to retrieve it with no questions asked, or they can surrender it in the faith-based community.

Sounds like a great idea. I ask the police chief to show just one city where this type program had any noticeable reduction in gun related crime. How about an automatic 5 years in prison if caught with an illegal gun? No questions asked!

This has been proven, repeatedly, to be an ineffective program.
It does not capture the guns used in crimes. It does not impact gun related crime rates or injuries. There were even cases where gun collectors who couldn't get rid of their worthless pieces were turning them in for $50-$100 each, depending on the program. Most guns turned in cannot be traced to a crime.

This is just public relations, its not a solution.

I am sure this is going to rid Fayetteville of it's illegal firearms. Dream On.

I would think that the vast number of people who have illegal guns are those who are engaged in criminal activities for a living. The illegal weapons are the tools of their trade. Why would they want to turn in their guns? Some people may turn in guns but they are not going to be the individuals that are doing the robberies and gang shootings.
