Two NC children killed when car driven by 15-year-old hits tree

Posted September 27

— The North Carolina Highway Patrol says two children riding in a car driven by a 15-year-old with a learner's permit were killed when the car veered off a road and hit a tree.

The patrol told local media outlets that the victims were a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old. Troopers said the driver was hospitalized with a concussion.

Trooper Kelly Rhodes said the driver told an officer that he just drifted off the road. He said no charges will be filed in Tuesday's accident.

According to Rhodes, the mother of the children and the driver was riding in the front passenger seat. She told a trooper she was looking down at some paperwork and when she looked up, the car was hitting the tree.

If the two younger children were legally in the vehicle driven by a 15 yo with a learners permit, it was in gross violation of common sense. The supposed supervising adult showed unforgivable negligence in not watching the driver. Likely although the story does not say, the two victims of this negligence were probably not wearing seatbelts. I suppose the "supervising" adult was too busy with paperwork to ensure the children's safety. I would not take my eyes off the road for anything if I was in the car with a 15 yo driver.
