RODANTHE, N.C. — N.C. Highway 12, the main thoroughfare through the Outer Banks, has reopened to all traffic, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday.

Crews have closed the four-wheel drive route, removed the checkpoints and reopened the highway to all traffic, officials said.

Parts of the highway have been closed since Hurricane Sandy moved up the East Coast in late October.

Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures in the coming weeks due to ongoing construction projects, sandbag installation and dune reconstruction.
