McCrory will not talk about abortion bill
Gov. Pat McCrory will not talk about what he would do if lawmakers send him a bill to restrict abortions in North Carolina.
Posted — UpdatedThe Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/12L1S1A) McCrory would not say Thursday if he would sign the bill into law. He was at a July Fourth parade in the Rowan County town of Faith.
The North Carolina Senate approved the restrictions Wednesday. The House Health Committee plans to take up the bill next Tuesday, meaning it could go before the full House later next week.
The bill would require abortion clinics to meet tougher standards similar to those for outpatient surgery clinics. Opponents say that would effectively close most of the state's 16 abortion clinics.
McCrory, who criticized the way the Senate handled the bill, said during his campaign last fall that he would not sign a bill with further abortion restrictions.
House Speaker Pro Tem Paul Stam predicted Friday that the governor would sign the abortion bill after the House passes it.
"I'm not a mind reader, but I would think so, yes," Stam, R-Wake, said during a taping of "On the Record" when asked about McCrory signing the bill.
He said McCrory's stance during the campaign was to "a non-specific question as to which there was no focus on anything in particular."
