Farmville father sought after baby found with burns

Posted May 24, 2013

— Farmville police were searching for a man Friday who they say burned his 3-month-old child.

James Lamar Woods is charged with negligent child abuse inflicting serious injury. According to investigators, the child was taken to Vidant Medical Center Wednesday evening after police were called to a home on Brooks Drive.

The child sustained second-degree burns over 12 percent of its body. Police said Friday that the child was recovering.

The baby's mother, Whitley Everett, was arrested and charged with assault on a child and accessory after the fact. She was released from the Pitt County jail Thursday after posting a $5,000 bond.

Anyone who knows Woods' whereabouts is asked to call police at 252-753-4111. Police said they believe he is in the Greenville area.

Burning this baby, UGH! just the thought makes you whatever. Pray for this baby and pray that they find this man who did it the baby.

Let's not forget the bond was for the MOTHER and it was low because as the story states "after the fact". She obviously had no idea it happened. While I do not condone what happened give her the benefit of the doubt until the story becomes more clear. Here again assumptions are being made.

Why is he running and hiding? When found, I do hope they charge him as high as the law will allow. The baby did not ask for all that. I hope the Social Services has taken this baby away from the parents. Then give the baby to a good loving and caring family.

The law states "reunificaiton with the family." when we can start using common sense and do what is best for the child maybe some of this stuff will stop..

Had this man been accused of perpetuating this same crime on a total stranger, the bond set would be out of his reach. I'll never understand why our society thinks it is okay for parents to do this. I'll bet you money that child will eventually be put back in the mother's care.

@whatthe......, while I agree with the punishment for child abuse being stiffer, bond isn't a form of fine or punishment. It's to ensure a court appearance if the post bail. He's been accused, not convicted. if he's convicted he will serve time, not pay money

why is social services at fault. We don't know if they (accused) are even on assistance. The parents are the ones and only ones who should be held accountable. Where in the article did it say they had been called out before this happened??? Don't put half truths in to the story.

This is not a man and never will be.

  • what the........ May 24, 2013

Bond is not high enough. Any hurt/harm to a baby should have stiffer fines/bonds. Babies are so helpless.

@kbird...unfortunately child abuse takes place in several setting...there are many people that don't need that check and still abuse their children...so its not just the poor people...Soc Serv needs to start being held accountable for injured children when they have been called out to investigate previously....
