FARMVILLE, N.C. — Farmville police were searching for a man Friday who they say burned his 3-month-old child.

James Lamar Woods is charged with negligent child abuse inflicting serious injury. According to investigators, the child was taken to Vidant Medical Center Wednesday evening after police were called to a home on Brooks Drive.

The child sustained second-degree burns over 12 percent of its body. Police said Friday that the child was recovering.

The baby's mother, Whitley Everett, was arrested and charged with assault on a child and accessory after the fact. She was released from the Pitt County jail Thursday after posting a $5,000 bond.

Anyone who knows Woods' whereabouts is asked to call police at 252-753-4111. Police said they believe he is in the Greenville area.
